Nexus as a Multi-channel Instrument
Do you want to perform several electrochemical measurements simultaneously? Then you need a multi-channel potentiostat. A multi-channel potentiostat allows you to perform multiple experiments at the same time. Nexus is a single-channel instrument that can be stacked to function as a multi-channel potentiostat. Does a single Nexus already have a second channel?
Nexus is our high-end model and features many advanced options to cover a wide range of applications. Two of these features are related to a “second channel”. They are independent and serve distinct purposes:
- S2 (Second Sense Lead)
S2 serves as an additional voltage-sensing input, with the same specifications as the main Reference Electrode input. It measures the potential relative to either the main Reference Electrode or the main Sense Electrode. In addition, S2 can be used for impedance calculations (Dual EIS), provided it is connected to a point where the AC current is the same as in the main channel. For instance, it can be employed to measure the impedance of both the anode and the cathode in a three-electrode cell. - BiPot (BiPotentiostat Module)
The BiPot module introduces a second working electrode (WE2), operating versus the same reference and counter electrodes as the main channel. In BiPotentiostat mode, both working electrodes (WE1 and WE2) are recorded simultaneously. WE2 operates in potentiostatic mode, meaning it can independently control its potential and measure its current. Refer to our BiPotentiostat article to check which techniques are available when using this mode.
As both ‘second channels’ of the Nexus are designed for use in a single cell, they cannot be used to measure two independent cells.
Why does a stack of Nexus functions as a multi-channel?
The MultiTrace software already enables you to combine multiple PalmSens single-channel potentiostats, transforming them into a flexible multi-channel system. This allows you to expand your setup at your own pace, making the most of your existing instruments.
With Nexus, you take this concept to the next level. Beyond simple expansion, Nexus introduces advanced capabilities typically reserved for dedicated multi-channel potentiostats—bringing more power, flexibility, and performance to your measurements.
- How to connect the Nexus potentiostat?
Nexus offers both USB-C and Ethernet connectivity, giving you full freedom in how you build your setup. Whether you connect multiple devices via a USB hub or use a standard Ethernet switch, Nexus makes it easy to scale your system in a clean and efficient way—ideal for multi-instrument environments. - How to make sure one potentiostat channel doesn’t influence another channel?
Thanks to its floating ground (galvanic isolation), Nexus allows multiple channels to share electrodes within the same experiment. This enables advanced configurations, such as cell arrays with multiple Working Electrodes and shared Reference and Counter Electrodes—unlocking powerful multi-channel measurement possibilities.
- How to synchronize two potentiostat channels with the Nexus?
Nexus ensures precise coordination between channels through hardware synchronization in Simultaneous Mode. Slave channels are triggered by a master channel at every measurement point, delivering highly synchronized data acquisition. This feature is particularly useful for polypotentiostat setups.
Multiple instruments, one software
Each Nexus instrument can be assigned with a channel number. One of them is assigned as the master for commanding the hardware synchronization. MultiTrace also allows Ethernet connection. MultiTrace interface looks like a multiple-instance version of PSTrace, so if you already use PSTrace, MultiTrace will look familiar.
